Abbeys, Cathedrals, Churches and Round Towers

Tipperary County is particularly rich in archeological sites of interest.Because of this profusion it is only possible here to list a representative selection.

Athassel Abbey - Near Golden.12th century Augustinian, very extensive in a riverside setting.
Cahir - Cahir Abbey,1220 Tipperary rd.
The Church of Ireland - on the dublin/cashel is by John Nash
Carrick on Suir - Saint Mollerans Church incorporates remenants of 14th Century Fransiscan Abbey.
Cashel - The Rock of Cashel.The large cathedral, ancient round tower and the very early Romanesque Cormac's Chapel, perched on a dramatic outcrop of rock were silent witnesses to many of the stirring events of irish history.
Hore Abbey - (Benedictine) and St.Dominics Abbey. Access direct, Admission free.
Clonmel - St.Marys Church, 13th Century, The grounds are accessable while the key to the church is available from the tourist office,with prior notice only please.

St Patricks Well - site which incorporates an early church ruin and surrounds an even earlier cross, is located near clonmel.Signposted.
Emly - the cathedral site dates back to the original foundation established by St. Aillbe in 527AD.
Fethard - Augustinian Friary founded circa 1303.
The Holy Trinity Church - circa 1200 and is still in use.Its grounds are enclosed by the medieval town walls.
Holycross Cistercian Abbey - The church of this Abbey was re-roofed in 1975.One of the finest 15th Century churches in Ireland.
Glen of Aherlow - Toureen Peakaun.A small ancient monastic site.
Kilcash - A romanesque doorway is the main interest of this small rural church. The area features in one of irelands most famous lament poem.
Kilcooley - Cistercian Abbey is set in the grounds of a large estate adjoining the ancinet pilgrim route to cashel.
Monaincha Church, Roscrea - the church used to situated on what used to be an island in a bog. The nave and chancel church has a finely decorated 12th Century west doorway and chancel arch constructed in a warm sandstone.
Nenagh - In Abbey St. are the remains of a 13th century fransiscan friary.
Roscrea - In the town are a no. of monuments, situated beside the road.
St Cronans Church, Cross and Round Tower. - The modern road cuts through a monastery founded by St.Cronan who died between 600 and 620.
Franciscan Friary - The gateway to the present catholic church is part of a fransiscan friary founded before 1477. Only the east and north walls of the chancel, the bell tower and parts of the northern nave arcade remain.
Tubrid - Burial ground of Fr.Seathrun Keating,poet and historian.
